Question submitted by the audience in our recent webinar: "The Itchy Dog":
What percentage of itchy-skin issues in dogs is due to allergies? And is there a breakdown of what percentage / ballpark share of THOSE skin issues are due to inhalant allergies (vs. parasites, food or contact allergies)?
Answer by: Andrew Hillier, BVSc, MANZCVS, DACVD
There are over 2 million dogs with allergic skin disease in the U.S. The exact breakdown is not clearly documented and the causes may vary by region. For example flea allergy is more common in the south and west than the north. It is my experience that atopic dermatitis is more common than food allergies.
