Compulsive and repetitive behaviors in companion animals are rooted in normal maintenance behaviors such as grooming, eating, or walking but performed out of context in an exaggerated, repetitive, or ritualistic manner.
Examples include pica (ingestion of non-edible items such as dirt, rocks, sticks, cloth, etc.), tail chasing, fence running, shadow or light chasing, and self-mutilation.
