Is there a typical eye pressure that is indicative of PU? My Golden was diagnosed at age 6.5, pressures were 12 & 13. They have stayed in that range. We just had an exam this week and they were 9 & 10. My vet said when they get down to 5, we’ll need to start having a conversation about alternatives.
Dr. Wendy Townsend, DVM, MS, DACVO responded:
So the pressures can be very low (5-6) in older Goldens who do not have PU. I typically do not adjust my treatments based on pressures (or pressures being “too low”). I do adjust therapy if they start to increase (18-20) because then I worry about secondary glaucoma. From one study that we have done, the pressure inside the eye does not predict at all whether a Golden has PU, or cysts, or a normal exam.
