This question was submitted during our webinar titled: What Works for Cats with Chronic Kidney Disease? - A Nutritionist's Perspective

    Question:
Do you recommend Epakitin Powder for phosphate binding?

Dr. Donna Raditic, DVM, DACVN, CVA responded:

Below is some information from Dr. Joe Bartges who is a nutritionist and internist with sub-specialty in urology / nephrology. He has Epakitin listed as a phosphate binder, but it is not one he routinely uses because of concerns with calcium ... i.e. feline idiopathic hypercalcemia.

    Phosphate Binders:

    • Aluminum hydroxide
      • 60-90 mg/kg divided

    • Lanthanum
      • 30-50 mg/kg divided

    • Ca acetate
      • 20-40 mg/kg/meal

    • Sevelamer

    • Epakitin
