    With the increase in interest and awareness about the medicinal applications of cannabis in humans, pet owners have shown a similar interest in its application for disease management in companion animals.     Few studies have been published on the applications, efficacy, and safety of cannabinoids in pets. The focus of this Specialty Update is on what is known about hemp and plant cannabinoid derivatives including:

    - The differences between marijuana and hemp and their cannabinoid derivatives
    - The endocannabinoid system and cannabinoid receptors
    - Biologic effects of cannabinoids
    - Clinical applications for cannabinoids including behavioral health, pain management, neurologic disorders, inflammatory conditions, and cancer
    - A Roundtable Discussion including commercially available products, what consumers and prescribers need to know when selecting products, and their applications in companion animals
