• Description:
  Pruritus is one of the more common findings in dogs and cats with allergies, and it often precedes the development of cutaneous signs or classic lesions (alopecia, evidence of self trauma / hot spots, etc.).
  
  GI signs, including changes in stool character and frequency of defecation, are commonly seen in patients with primary gastrointestinal diseases, but they can also be observed in patients with other problems including adverse food reactions or food allergy.
  
  In this Evidence Based Update, findings of a study that examined the correlation of pruritus and GI signs in healthy dogs is discussed including:
  
  - Use of a clinical scoring scale to evaluate pruritus
  - Use of a clinical fecal scoring system
  - The relationship between exercise and fecal scores
  - Normal references for frequency of bowel movements in dogs
  - Accuracy of client assessments of their pet's pruritus
