Dealing with Dogs that Bark Excessively

  • October 1, 2015 10:55 AM EDT

This week we've posted a new video - Part II on the topic of Nuisance Barking in Dogs. Barking is a species typical behavior - it's normal for a dog to bark, but humans can find it bothersome. As we learned in Part I of this topic, some dogs learn to bark for attention, and others bark in response to triggers in their environment.

In this segment, Dr. Christensen provides more insight on this behavior in dogs and offers suggestions on how to modify the behavior of excessive barking in dogs. Discussion points include:

    • How to deal with attention seeking barking
    • How to deal with dogs that bark excessively out of doors or at passersby
    • How to ensure that the animal's general species-specific needs are met (as this can help to minimize the undesired behavior)
    • Why aversives - including shock or citronella collars - are not recommended for trying to modify this behavior in dogs

View Dealing With Dogs That Bark Excessively - it's available for On Demand viewing (running time 21 mins; Approved for CE credit in New York and by the NJVMA, pending approval for CE credit by AAVSB RACE).

Here's an excerpt from the video - speaking to reasons why aversives (shock or citronella collars) aren't the best to consider in managing dogs that bark excessively.
