In this first segment of a 4-part series on the topic of liver disease in dogs, we learn how to approach canine patients with increased liver enzymes on routine blood work analysis. Dr. Leveille-Webster - a board-certified small animal internist with expertise in dog and cat hepatobiliary disorders - discusses a systematic algorithm and rational approach to determining why a dog has increases in either serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) or serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT).  Discussion includes:

  • When these enzyme elevations should be of concern
  • How to differentiate whether they are due to primary or secondary hepatobiliary disorders
  • The importance of recognizing breed predispositions and if they might be due to potentially hepatotoxic drugs or supplements
  • Common diseases associated with liver enzyme elevations and how they are diagnosed
