In previous sessions of this series on chronic kidney disease in dogs there was brief discussion of urine protein - as one of the parameters we test for in canine patients with CKD, and how that information is incorporated into clinical staging and treatment plans.
In this session we explore this further and discuss why evaluation of urine protein is such an important element of the diagnostic plan and how it may impact disease progression. We also look at some of the more advanced options for diagnostic testing of patients with increased urine protein that might lead to specific treatment protocols. Finally, we review some of the ways in which the treatment for proteinuria may align with, or conversely have to be balanced against, the other options for treating CKD in dogs. Discussion includes:
- Defining proteinuria in patients with CKD
- Advanced testing for proteinuria and when it is indicated
- Treatment and management of proteinuria
