Pug Dog Encephalitis - Another Approach To Treating Neuroinflammatory Disease
Necrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME) is a fatal neuroinflammatory disease that most commonly affects smaller dog breeds. This disease also shares similarities to multiple sclerosis (MS) that affects humans. The Pug is one breed known to be at a higher risk for this disease. Unfortunately, most dogs aren’t diagnosed until the disease is in the advanced stages and fulminant. Standard of care for those patients include potent immunosuppressive drugs, corticosteroids, and anti-seizure medications. However, early recognition of the disease and intervention with stem cell therapy has been shown to lead to remission. Dr. Rebecca Windsor - a veterinary neurologist - explains and shares findings of a clinical trial that examined the effects of stem cell therapy in Pugs with presumptive NME.
