This question was submitted during a past webinar on the topic of glaucoma:
Question:
How long should I wait between using proparacaine and performing tonometry? Should I give it a minute? Is a few seconds appropriate?
Answer provided by Sheri L. Berger, DVM, DACVO
I'd suggest about 1 minute. Though "a few (or several) seconds" may be sufficient for some (brachycephalics), others may require more than a few seconds (dolicocephalics).
Comment by Brad Holmberg, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVO
I agree with Dr. Berger. The onset of action is reported to be 2 to 20 seconds. Maximal effect of topical anesthesia with proparacaine lasts for 15 minutes if you give 1 drop, 25 minutes if you give two drops with some anesthesia lasting up to 45 minutes.
If you use a tonovet (rebound tonometer), you do not need to use topical anesthetic.
