Nanette Walker Smith is a Colorado native. She, husband Dave, and two daughters live in Colorado on their mountain top with a rescue Great White Pyrenees, 2 rescue cats, and assorted fish. She holds a Bachelor in Science in Zoology from the University of California, Davis; Associate of Science degrees in Animal Health Technology and Environmental Design-Architecture from Cosumnes River College; and a Master of Education-Vocational Education (emphasis on Adult Education and Community College Administration) from the University of Central Florida. Her veterinary experience includes the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (as an undergraduate); Sacramento Veterinary Surgical Services in Sacramento, California; Pinedale Animal Clinic-a mixed animal practice in Wyoming, and Palmer Lake Veterinary Clinic, Colorado, and teaching at the AVMA accredited Brevard Community College Veterinary Technology Program (now Eastern Florida State College). Nanette was one of the early volunteer members of the Veterinary Support Personnel Network and helped revitalize VSPN in 1993, with the help of the VSPN team, re-launched VSPN in 1996, and as an employee of VIN grew VSPN from 30 members to over 40,000. In 2000, she coordinated and launched online CE for support staff through VIN which has since grown to over 50 courses per year incorporating all levels of veterinary medicine and practice management. Nanette was employed by the Veterinary Information Network (www.vin.com) for over 15 years. As Content Director, Nanette spearheaded facilitating resources, content, discussions, and much more for the veterinary support community.
Nanette has been extremely active in veterinary technician and veterinary medical association functions. She served 12 years in the Sacramento Valley Veterinary Technician Association Board and the California Veterinary Medical Association-RVT Committee; a term as Vice President of the North American Veterinary Technician Association (NAVTA); co-founded and served on the Board of the Wyoming Veterinary Technician Association and still serves as an advisor to the association; served on the Florida Veterinary Technician Association (FVTA) Board; and maintains active membership in NAVTA, AVTE (Association of Veterinary Technician Educators), and several state associations: CACVT (CO), WyVTA, CVMA (CA), and AVTA (AK).
