But how do you get a consistent "seizure event" in animals so you are comparing apples to apples? By your own definition seizure events have individual variation?

This is indeed a difficulty in veterinary studies on epilepsy. Human studies can often involve a specific epilepsy syndrome, or at least a specific type of seizure. This is not the case in veterinary studies, because our understanding and knowledge of epilepsy syndromes in dogs is rather limited. Studies are often performed in dogs with a general diagnosis of idiopathic epilepsy, but the heterogeneity of the study population does effect the conclusions that can be drawn from the study.
