Anxiety disorders and the use of pressure wraps (Thundershirt®)

  • June 24, 2015 10:57 AM EDT

Anxiety disorders are commonly seen in dogs. They are usually driven by a stressor, whether it's separation (from an owner), something in the environment, or a threat (real or perceived). The typical response to stress is "fight or flight," or stated differently, the animal can cope or adapt to the stressor or try to escape from it. Animals in confinement (ie. household pets) cannot necessarily flee from what may be stressing them, and the anxiety that ensues can result in a great deal of panic and suffering for the affected pet.

The treatment plan for a dog with anxiety is based on the findings of a behavior analysis, therefore it can vary between individuals. Therapies may include desensitization and counter-conditioning to the stressor, medications, and other ancillary methods - including pheromonal therapy and the application of pressure, which is known to reduce anxiety and stress in several species. Pressure wraps have been available for some time, however there are few studies and little evidence to support their use in dogs with anxiety disorders.

In my recent Evidence Based Update, the findings of a study that examined the effect of the commercially available Thundershirt® on heart rate and behavior in dogs with separation anxiety or generalized anxiety disorder are discussed. This EBU is available for on demand viewing - free registration compliments of the VetVine Specialty Consulting Service (running time 13 minutes; Approved for CE credit in New York and by the NJVMA, pending approval for CE credit by AAVSB RACE).
