Adverse medical events and medical mistakes that result in "near misses" or patient death are an unfortunate reality in the challenging world of veterinary medicine. Sometimes these events are known to members of the veterinary team and other times mistakes may go unreported (especially if the patient didn't die). Most practices lack systems or protocols for navigating these types of occurrences and the consequences can be significant. But what if we could transform these difficult moments into opportunities for growth, improved patient care, and a more resilient team?
The focus of this workshop is to create an understanding of the potential impacts of adverse medical events on individuals, and to provide insights into how hospital teams can create a safe environment and best support those involved. Through expert-led training and interactive discussion, workshop participants will learn:
1) The impacts that medical mistakes and adverse medical events have on an individual’s mindset
2) The costs to all involved for not successfully supporting individuals in the aftermath of an adverse medical event
3) What debriefing is and why it’s critical to debrief with individuals after an adverse medical event or mistake
4) Practical guidelines and steps to facilitating debriefings
