Question submitted by the audience in our recent webinar: What’s Feeding Those Seizures? An Update On Refractory Canine Epilepsy And The Potential Link to Gastrointestinal Health:

Dr. Muñana said that encephalitis comes under Structural Epilepsy.  Our neurologist says my dog has autoimmune encephalitis / meningitis, but she doesn’t call it epilepsy. Rather, the diagnosis says secondary seizures.   Would you put that in the category of Structural Epilepsy?

Answer by: Karen R. Muñana, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology):

Yes, this would be considered structural epilepsy. The seizures are secondary to the encephalitis.
