A Joint Effort - A New Way at Looking at Osteoarthritis

  • April 19, 2017 1:51 PM EDT

We are pleased to welcome Donna M. Raditic, DVM, CVA and Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition to our Member community. Dr. Raditic - the newest VetVine Contributor - will be sharing her expertise on a variety of integrative and complementary medicine interventions for companion animals.

We have kicked off her series with "A Joint Effort" - a 2 part presentation that provides us with a new way of thinking about osteoarthritis in pets as well as nutritional considerations for treating and preventing the disease in animals predisposed to developing orthopedic problems.

In Part I, Dr. Raditic introduced us to the concept of "cell niche" as a basis for individualizing patient care (running time 8 mins). This presentation is foundational for deciding on the components of a multimodal treatment plan for the patient with osteoarthritis.

In Part II, the focus is on the use of supplements and therapeutic veterinary diets including:

    •  Disease Modifying Osteoarthritis Drugs (DMOAD)
      - Polysulfated glycosaminoglycan
      - Pentosan

    • Supplements
      - Oral glucosamine / chondroitin sulfate
      - Green lipped mussel extract
      - Omega 3 fatty acids
      - Curcumin
      - Avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU)
      - Zeel
      - Boswellia

    • Veterinary therapeutic diets

The evidence supporting the efficacy of these supplements is presented as well as indications, contraindications, and best practices when combining use of supplements with therapeutic diets.
